An Introduction to NLP

The term NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming.  While this may be a complex sounding name, it is one that represents three of the most fundamental aspects of  human experience: neurology, language and programming. The neurological component regulates how our bodies sense the world around us; the linguistic component determines how we categorize these perceptions and communicate with others; and the programming component corresponds to those models and patterns of behavior that we adopt over time.  NLP is a model of communication that focuses on identifying and using patterns of thought that influence a person's behavior as a means of rapidly improving the quality and effectiveness of their lives.

The technique of NLP was originated by John Grinder (a specialist in linguistics) and Richard Bandler (whose background was in mathematics and gestalt therapy) for the purpose of making explicit models of human excellence. They were particularly interested in discovering the essential differences between those people who are outstanding in their field and those who are merely competent. If the apparently innate gifts that make some people shine at what they do could be understood, then they could also be taught to others.  The  developers of NLP have formulated a set of techniques that make it possible to encapsulate many of the things that excellent people do and then to teach these techniques to others.

A central tenet of NLP is the idea that we all have, what is known in NLP terms as a "map".  During the course of our life, each of us produces our own map from our experience. This map is our personal picture of what goes on in the world from our perspective. It is often not a totally accurate representation.  In the mapping process, we choose unconsciously to attend to what we think is relevant and important, and to edit out what what we perceive is not. We often make generalizations and assumptions according to our experience, and unwittingly distort things in order to make sense of them.

A second fundamental tenet of NLP is that we humans are highly complex interacting systems.  In an intricate feedback system what we see or hear affects what we do, which then again affects what we perceive.  An important assumption within this system is that our aim is always to reach a state of balance and stability.  We will always make the best choices available to us according to our view of the world, our map.  It follows from this idea that unproductive and limiting behavior is not the result of conscious bad intentions or lack of ability, but rather of our having an inadequate map to effectively guide our progress towards our goal.

One of the skills that NLP teaches is known as "modeling". This skill provides the ability to discover a person's map - both the bits they are aware of and the bits that are unconscious - and to use various tools and strategies to illuminate the features of this map. In therapy, one of the aims is to discover  the gaps and distortions in a clients map that cause problems and limitations in their lives.  Further modeling tools are then used to help construct an effective map that will naturally lead to desired goals.

The applications of this powerful technique are wide are varied.  NLP is used effectively for everything from achieving professional success in your chosen career to improving the quality of inter-personal relationships.  NLP is an effective proven vehicle for accelerated human change, radically altering our ideas about the 'old way' of lengthy psychotherapy.  Results from NLP are observed within a couple of sessions, not a couple of years.

Within the context of programs offered by Dusty White through NSI, the technique of NLP is seldom employed by itself.  Rather, these powerful techniques are incorporated within a program combining a range of other procedures tailored specifically to each  individual.  Often, however, NLP is the central focus, and the following are some specific examples of the benefits from an NLP-centric program:

  Buisiness and Professional Benefits

Businesses can use NLP to develop world-class sales personnel  and foster improved customer service.   Corporate groups can use NLP to implement organizational change effectively and to rapidly increase team productivity. Educators can comprehend  the verbal and nonverbal language of every child to identify how each one learns best.  As classrooms become increasingly diverse, and academics more challenging, NLP skills are becoming essential tools for effective teaching.  Counselors can help clients become more functional in a much shorter time frame.  Not only is the client's stress quickly reduced often saving relationships and jobs, but the reality of today's limited insurance coverage makes it crucial to achieve maximum results in minimum time. Medical and Dental Professionals can learn to quickly recognize and mitigate patients' fears and anxieties about procedures. This translates to higher client satisfaction and a more successful practice.

  Benefits for the Individual Person

Clarify your dreams and personal goals for the future and identify those barriers that may be holding you back. Change the unwanted habits and behaviors that are standing in your way.  Break down the obstacles between you and your goals. Improve the quality of your relationship with others.  Understand you partner's and children's needs and communication styles more fully. Enhance rapport and communication with others.  Win the confidence and trust of those around you.  Recognize how others are using language to influence and control you.
